Working Girl

Summer is here (finally)! Now that school is out for the summer, I can devote more time to Stylin' Iowan, as well as my internship. I love dressing up for work, especially in the warmer months. It's fun to wear cute work appropriate dresses and fun pencil skirts, pieces that I don't normally wear from class to work. Today I'm featuring one of my good friends from work, Britt! We actually took these photos on her last day of work, as she recently graduated from Iowa this spring. She will truly be missed at JPEC!

Below is a message from Britt about this outfit and her personal style:

"My name is Brittany and I just graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Health and Human Physiology: Health Promotion and a Certificate of Entrepreneurial Management. While in college, I was extremely busy as I was a full-time student, I was the Marketing & Events Intern at the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center, I created a student organization and coordinated an annual 5K. Even though I am quite busy, looking my best has always been important to me. When shopping, I search for “classic” pieces to build my working girl wardrobe. I usually spice up my outfits with a great necklace, shoes or a jacket. As I am always on the go, I like to choose outfits that can go from work to a night on the town. Overall, I think my style is simple and chic with a little bit of spice every now and then."

This dress is great for work! I like that the straps are thicker, making it more appropriate so that the shoulders aren't completely bare. Depending on how formal your work environment is, you can throw any colored cardy on with pumps, or even tights for the fall and winter months. Versatile and affordable, all things girls love!

Necklace: Francesca’s ($20)
Shoes: Younkers ($30)

Met Gala Goes Punk

I digress from my normal routine to reflect on the Met Gala that took place in NYC last night. For some of you who may not be familiar, the Met Gala may be one of the most stylish, glamorous and risque celebrity events of the year. This year's "Punk" theme brought back many middle school Avril Lavine - esque memories. Oh to be young and blue-eyeshadow in love!

While skimming through press releases searching for my fellow sk8ter gurls, I couldn't help but notice how few celebrities stuck with the "Punk" theme. This event is in fact a costume gala, right? No doubt many of the attendees took major fashion risks, however I didn't identify their risks with the theme. Miley Cyrus was one of the few attendees who truly went all-out PUNK! Call me crazy, but she wins best dressed in my style book.

Something I really enjoy about events like the Met Gala are the crazy styles that will most likely become mainstream by next season. Although this event showcases designer duds that are much too out-there for my personal taste, many of these glamorous gowns (and pant suits - I see you Kristen Stewart) are really a preview of what styles consumers might see in stores next season! From the looks of it, more pointed stilettos and bare midriffs will be readily available in Forever 21s near you! Below are just a few of my favorite outfits Hollywood wore last night!

No Makeup, Just Pink

I've been running around non-stop this week, so I have thrown-out the possibility of wearing makeup (yikes). With finals approaching all too soon and summer not coming soon enough, I'm definitely wearing less makeup to save time and accommodate the humidity! In Emma's post a few weeks ago, I asked all of you how you feel about neon colors. If you can't tell from this post, highlighter pink is definitely growing on me...

Having style doesn't have to be difficult. Throwing on a pair of jean shorts and a t-shirt, in my opinion, will never go out of style. My take on this classic just involves more pink :)
